32 leaders, activists of BNP bodies land in jail

Thirty-two leaders and activists of Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, who surrendered to a court here yesterday in connection with a case filed under the Speedy Trial, were sent to jail. They all are charge-sheeted accused in a case for vandalising vehicles, banks and business establishments in Thakurgaon town on May 16. The accused surrendered to the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court at around 11:30am and sought bail. After hearing, Senior Judicial Magistrate Masud Pervez rejected their bail petitions and sent them to prison. They were also shown arrested in another case for damaging a police vehicle in the town during the incident. Jubo Dal and JCD men went on the rampage in the town on May 16 in protest at the sending of 33 leaders of BNP-led 18-paty alliance, including BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam, to jail in a vehicle torching case the same day. They vandalised at least 100 vehicles, several banks, business establishments in the town and clashed with police at Thakurgaon intersection, leaving at least 12 people, including three cops, injured, police stated in the charge-sheet. Law enforcers fired 30 to 40 tear gas shells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, police further said. A case was filed with Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station under the Speedy Trail Act on the night of May 16. Police pressed charges against 39 BNP and JCD men on Sunday. Of them, six were arrested earlier while the rest, including JCD district unit President Rashed Alam Labu, General Secretary Aminul Islam Shohag and Organising Secretary Masudul Islam Munna, are still at large. Chief Judicial Magistrate Jukfikar Ali Khan issued arrest warrants against the absconding accused on May 28. Immediately after the court order, Jubo Dal and JCD activists brought out a procession in the town and paraded the main streets demanding immediate release of their party men.
