Elderly man held for alleged bid to abduct boys
Police arrested an elderly man on charge of attempt to abduct two schoolboys from Ashratpur area in the town yesterday.
The arrestee was identified as Altaf Hossain Khan, 60, of Arazi Chandkhana village of Kishoreganj upazila of Nilphamari district.
According to the family members of the boys, the accused became friendly with Obaydur Rahman Ornab, 12, son of Shahabuddin Mian of Ashratpur area and Md Hayat Mahmud Oni, 12, son of Anchharul Haque of New Adarshapara area in the town. He used to meet them on their way to North Bengal Coaching Centre in Ashratpur area for the last one month.
The accused allegedly allured the boys by telling them that he would get them admitted to Rangpur Cadet College. He also offered them snacks and gave money several times.
On last Monday, Altaf Hossain Khan threatened them with dire consequences if they refused to go with him.
Ornab and Oni disclosed it to their family members. Their family members informed the matter to Abbasul Haque, principal of North Bengal Coaching Centre on Tuesday.
Abbasul, however, suggested both the families to send the boys to the coaching centre as usual.
On Wednesday, when Ornab and Oni came out of the centre, Altaf Hossain Khan 'forced' them to go to a nearly tea stall.
Meanwhile, the teachers of the coaching centre with the help of the locals, captured the alleged abductor and informed police.
On information, a team led by Kobirul Islam, SI of Rangpur Kotwali police station rushed to the spot and arrested Altaf Hossain Khan.
Officer in-charge of Rangpur Kotwali police station said that during primary interrogation, the accused admitted to his involvement with the incident.
Shahabuddin Mian, father of Ornab lodged a case with the police station in this connection, the OC added.
