Youth shot dead in Moheshkhali
A youth was shot dead by a gang of criminals at Mohammadshah Ghona village in Moheshkhali upazila of the district on Monday night.
The victim was identified as Md Belal Hossain, 26, son of Akbar Ahmed of the village under Kalarmarchhora union.
Police and witnesses said a gang of criminals picked up Belal while he was returning home from Kalarmarchhora Bazar at around 11:00pm. They took Belal to Mujibkilla area and shot him dead.
As locals rushed to the spot, the gang fired blank shots and managed to flee.
Locals said there had been a conflict between two groups over capture of shrimp enclosures in the area. Belal might have been killed as a sequel to the conflict.
He was a supporter of former UP chairman and Awami League leader Osman Goni, who was shot dead by a gang at Kalarmarchhora Bazar on the night of March 29 this year.
Ranjit Barua, officer-in-charge of Moheshkhali Police Station, said they recovered the body yesterday morning and sent it to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police have been deployed in the area to avert any further untoward situation, the OC added.
No one was arrested in connection with the murder as of 6:00pm yesterday.
