One killed, 74 hurt as rival villagers clash in 2 dists
One person was killed and at least 74 others were injured as rival groups of villagers clashed in Sirajganj and Habiganj yesterday and the day before.
One person was killed and 25 others were injured in a fierce clash between Mollah group and Dokla group in Saratoil village under Shahzadpur upazila in Sirajganj district yesterday, reports our correspondent.
Farhad Hossain, 65, of Dokla group, who was injured in the clash, died at Sirajganj General Hospital yesterday evening while undergoing treatment.
Jasim Uddin Sarker, OC of Shahzadpur PS said there was a long running feud between the two groups over establishing supremacy in the area.
Several clashes took place in the past. Following a quarrel yesterday, supporters of Korban Ali and Abdul Mollah locked in a fierce clash leaving 25 people injured.
Among them, Farhad Hossain succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Seriously injured Sakhawat Hossain was sent to Dhaka for treatment.
In Sylhet, at least 50 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over a trivial matter at Tajpur Bazar in Osmaninagar upazila on Monday night, reports Our Staff Correspondent.
Police and witnesses said Fatik Mia of Dashhal village locked in an altercation with Abdur Rab of Matihani village over throwing water from Rab's beauty parlour on the first floor of a market at about 6:30pm.
Later, the supporters of two groups, equipped with sticks and rods, engaged in a fierce clash at the market on Dhaka-Sylhet highway, leaving 50 people injured from the both sides.
During the clash, the rival groups vandalised 20 shops and looted 15 others. Vehicles movement on the highway came to a halt for over an hour.
On information, police rushed to the scene and resorted to baton charge to bring the situation under control. The traffic movement resumed at 9:00pm.
OC Al Amin of Osmaninagar PS said additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further clash.
