Rail-road blocked for 7 hrs in Kishoreganj

Rail and road communications between Kishoreganj and capital Dhaka remained suspended for seven hours yesterday as locals put barricades in the district protesting what they said a High Court (HC) judge's 'derogatory' remarks about the Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad. During a hearing of a ruling on Tuesday, Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik observed that Speaker Abdul Hamid had committed an offence tantamount to sedition by commenting in the House on an HC order. He also said the Speaker was completely ignorant about the apex court and the constitution. Meanwhile, Kishoreganj District Bar Association formed a human chain on the premises of District Judge's Court from 12:30pm to 1:00pm, demanding resignation of Justice Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik. Locals along with activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League put barricades on the railway at Sorarchar and on the highway at Bhagolpur in Bajitpur upazila around 6:00am, halting communication between the capital and Kishoreganj, the home district of Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Abdul Hamid. On request from the commuters, the protestors removed the barricade from Sorarchar at around 11:50am. But shortly afterwards, railway tracks at Manikkhali in Katiadi upazila were blocked. The agitators withdrew the blockades around 1:00pm, said Tariqul Mushtaq, a local AL leader. Egaro Shindhur, a Dhaka-bound train from Kishoreganj, and a Kishoreganj-bound local train from Bhairab got stranded at Bajitpur railway station following the blockade.
