A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry in 2003. Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Md Mafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, pronounced the verdict in absence of convict Sirajul Islam, 25, of Barahir Char of Manikganj Sadar upazila. The judge also acquitted three other accused -- Rafiqul Islam, Rabeya Begum and Samsul Mollah -- of the charges brought against them. According to prosecution, Julekha Begum, 20, daughter of Abdul Jalil, was strangled by Sirajul Islam on December 7 in 2003 as her family failed to meet his dowry demand. Jalil later filed a murder case with Manikganj Sadar police station against four people including Sirajul Islam. In Sirajganj, a housewife of Bagbati union in Sadar upazila was tortured allegedly by husband and others for dowry, reports our correspondent. She was also driven away from home by husband Shah Alam and in-laws who also threatened her of dire consequences she returned without the dowry money, the victim alleged. Nur Nabi, father of victim Nur Nahar, lodged a case with Sadar police in this connection on Sunday night. Police yesterday arrested Nahar's mother-in-law Asia Khatun, elder brother of her husband Lal Chand and younger brothers Abdul Kuddus and Manjur Alam. The victim said she was married to Shah Alam, son of Golam Hossain of Baidyadhaldar village about 4 years ago. Although her parents gave him Tk 10,000, Shah Alam demanded more Tk two lakh dowry. Failing to get the money, he began to torture Nahar, the victim said. On Friday, Nur Nahar was physically tortured and kept under lock and key after cutting her hair. She was not given any food for two days. On Sunday, she was driven away with her 4-month-old baby, according to police. Local UP member Korban Ali said, being a member of an influential family, Shah Alam did not obey the verdict of a village arbitration.
