Setting up regional protocol proposed

A South Asian regional seminar began here yesterday with a proposal to set up a regional protocol on strengthening news exchange cooperation between South Asian news agencies aimed at promoting trade, investment and development initiatives of the Saarc. Launching a news agency under Saarc Information Center (SIC) involving the government and private news agencies of Saarc nations can be the best way to strengthen the news agency cooperation in the South Asia region, the seminar was told. News agency journalists and representatives of information ministries of Saarc nations attended the seminar held at the Tashi Namgyel Resort at Paro, a tiny hilly city, 60 km away from the capital Thimpu. Chaired by Director of Saarc Dhan Bahadur Oli, the seminar on "How to increase cooperation among news agencies of Saarc" Director of SIC Laxmi Bilas Koirala and Senior Programme Manager of SIC Pankaj Pandey also spoke at the event. BSS City Editor Ajit Kumar Sarkar who presented paper for Bangladesh at the seminar said a wide range of networking strategies, including bilateral-and multilateral exchanges of news, sharing training courses and conducting research programme should be taken to strengthen news agency cooperation. A framework agreement will be signed tomorrow based on the main outcome of the seminar that emerged from the day long discussions on keynote papers of eight SAARC nations.
