Ctg Shrine Looting
Ex-Rab man being quizzed in jail
Anwara police have started interrogating Zulfiqar Ali Majumder, a sacked lieutenant colonel of army and former Rab official, over his alleged link in looting a Chittagong shrine last year.
The interrogation is underway at Chittagong Central Jail, where he has been in detention after his arrest on May 3.
Police obtained important information from Zulfiqar, sources said, but declined to give detail of the interrogation.
Upon an order from Chittagong Judicial Magistrate's Court, Abdus Samad, inspector (investigation) of Anwara Police Station, started quizzing Zulfiqar on May 20.
Police prayed for remanding him, but the court allowed only his interrogation in jail for 10 consecutive days.
"We will submit a report of this interrogation before the court within the timeframe", said Abdus Samad, also investigation officer (IO).
Sources said the court asked for submission of the report within 30 days from May 10.
On November 4, 2011, black and plainclothes members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) looted Tk 2.07 crore from Talsara Darbar Sharif in Anwara upazila.
Four months later, Idris Ali, a driver of the shrine, filed a case against 10 Rab men, including Zulfiqar, who was the commanding officer of Rab-7, and two of their informants.
The Rab authorities sent the 10 accused to their respective forces after a departmental investigation found them guilty of robbery. Later the army authorities sacked Zulfiqar. He was arrested by police in Dhaka on May 3.
