116 BNP men get bail
The High Court yesterday granted anticipatory bail for a month to 116 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance in two separate cases over Chittagong violence.
Police filed the cases with Kotwali Police Station in the port city against 360 opposition leaders and workers on charges of vandalising cars, obstructing police in discharging their duties and exploding bombs during an anti-government demonstration on May 13.
The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan granted bail to 116 defendants who appeared before the court.
The leaders and workers including Shahadat Hossain, general secretary of Chittagong city BNP, filed six separate petitions yesterday with the HC, seeking anticipatory bail in the cases.
Advocated Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, a lawyer for the petitioners, told The Daily Star that the accused, who got bail, would surrender before the lower court in the cases in a month.
Advocate Zainul Abedin and Barrister Shakila Farzana appeared for the petitioners.
