Over 200 Sylhet BNP men get bail in two cases

More than 200 BNP men, accused in two cases of vandalising and torching vehicles and and government offices at Biswanath upazila headquarters in Sylhet during the opposition's hartal on April 22, were granted bail yesterday. Forty-seven of them, who earlier took interim bail from a High Court bench for 10 days that ended on May 19, were granted bail as they appealed afresh, court sources said. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Speedy Trial Court of Sylhet Md Abul Quashem also granted bail to 160 others in the same cases after they appealed for bail. Biswanath police submitted charge sheet against seven union parishad (UP) chairmen and 202 BNP, Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal men in the two cases on May 14. Md Abul Kalam, assistant sub-inspector of Biswanath Police Station, submitted the charge sheet, which showed 41 witnesses including 19 policemen and 11 'alamats,' with the Judicial Magistrate of Speedy Trial court of Sylhet The charge sheet were framed against Biswanath UP Chairman Jalal Uddin, also the upazila unit BNP president, Biswanath Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Gous Khan, Alongkari UP Chairman Lilu Miah, Khajanchi UP Chairman Nizam Uddin Siddiqui, Lamakazi UP Chairman Kabir Hossain Dhola Mia, Doulatpur UP Chairman Abbas Ali, Deokolosh UP Chairman Tahid Miah and Doshghar UP Chairman Shafique Uddin, among others. Among them, Jalal Uddin and Kabir Hossain Dhola Mia are in jail. Of the upazila's eight UP chairmen, seven are BNP men while one is Jamat men. Two of the accused, Amzad Ali and Siraj Miah, however, were dropped from the charges. Three opposition men were killed in the clashes between the opposition men and police and Awami League, Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists during the opposition's countrywide hartal on April 22. Police filed two cases accusing 8,000 BNP men and others for vandalising and torching vehicles at Ilias Ali's home upazila same day.
