BB executive director Jahangir passes away

Jahangir Alam, executive director of Bangladesh Bank (BB), died of cardiac arrest in Istanbul, Turkey yesterday at the age of 56, said an official. BB Deputy Governor Sitangshu Kumar Sur Chowdhury told The Daily Star that following a cardiac arrest at noon (local time), Jahangir was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. Jahangir went to Istanbul to attend a meeting of Islami Financial Services Board on Sunday. Sur Chowdhury said the Bangladesh embassy in Turkey had been contacted and hoped that the body would arrive in Dhaka tomorrow or Sunday. BB Governor Dr Atiur Rahman, who was in Nepal, expressed his deep shock at the death of Jahangir and recalled his significant contribution to the banking sector, said Sur Chowdhury. Atiur also expressed his sympathy to the bereaved family members and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. BB officials went to Alam's residence in the capital and consoled the family members.
