Fabrics seized at Ctg port
Customs officials seized a container full of synthetic fabrics at Chittagong port on Wednesday evening as the goods were getting delivered by using fake documents.
Acting on a tip-off, the officials of Audit Investigation and Revenue (AIR) branch of Chittagong Customs House intercepted a covered van carrying the container while it was going out of the port through North Container Yard (NCY) at around 8:00pm.
The officials opened the 20-foot equivalent unit container yesterday and found 9,532 kilograms of synthetic fabrics.
The seized documents showed one Speed Plus Manufacturing Company Limited located at plot No. 17 in Comilla Export Processing Zone was the importer of the consignment from India, said the sources adding that one Wasif Enterprise at Sheikh Mujib Road in Chittagong was the clearing and forwarding (C&F) agent.
Omar Faruk, superintendent of AIR branch, said they contacted Comilla EPZ authorities and came to know that production in the factory remained closed for months.
Faruk further said the culprits were trying to deliver the goods showing fake documents to evade duties amounting to around Tk 20 lakh.
The IP (import permission) certificate having an issue date of May 10 was also fake, said Faruk adding that Comilla EPZ issued last IP to the factory on September 6 last year.
Md Nasir Uddin, assistant commissioner of Chittagong Customs Bond, who is posted at Comilla EPZ, told The Daily Star that the factory remained closed.
