Remove names of Pakistani collaborators from structures
HC asks govt
The High Court yesterday issued a rule asking the government to explain in two weeks why the names of Pakistani collaborators should not be removed from the roads and structures across the country.
In response to a writ petition, the court asked the officials concerned to explain why they should not be directed to rename those roads, buildings and structures after the freedom fighters.
The officials were also asked to explain why they should not be directed to bring to book those persons, who are involved in naming of the roads and structures after Pakistani collaborators and leaders of the anti-liberation forces.
An HC bench came up with the rule following the petition filed by Prof Muntasir Mamun, a teacher of the History department of Dhaka University, and Shahriar Kabir, an eminent writer.
They stated in the petition that many structures have been named after the leaders of anti-liberation forces at different times after the independence, which is against the spirit of the War of Liberation.
They mentioned that a road in Khulna and an auditorium of Islamic University were named after Khan A Sabur and Shah Azizur Rahman who were the collaborators and leaders of anti-liberation forces.
In the writ petition, Prof Muntasir and Shahriar Kabir sought necessary order upon the government to remove the names of alleged collaborators from the road and structures.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim also directed the government to suspend the names of Khan A Sabur Road in Khulna and Shah Azizur Rahman Auditorium of Islamic University immediately.
During the day's hearing, the court also ordered the government to submit a list of the roads, structures and buildings across the country which was titled after the names of collaborators and leaders of anti-liberation forces before it by May 28.
Advocate Belal Husain Joy appeared for the petitioners, while Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain and Assistant Attorney General Yeadia Zaman represented the government.
