Death toll in Naogaon clash rises to 4

Another indigenous man, injured in Friday's clash at Chakgopal village in Manda upazila, died yesterday, raising the death from the melee to 4. The deceased was identified as Krishna Marandi, 42, of Pungi village in Niamatpur upazila. Those died on Friday are Moharam Marang, 50, Madon Marandi, 48, and Elias Marandi, 48. Inspector (investigation) M Mostafa Kamal of Manda police station said, Krishna succumbed to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in the morning. He said Abdus Salam, brother of Dalim filed a case against 28 named and several other unmanned people. Police arrested four people in this connection. Meanwhile, the residents of Chakgopal and adjoining villages fled their houses fearing attacks by the indigenous people and mass arrest. Police said there had been a longstanding dispute between Dalim and Anwar Hossain over the ownership of 10 bighas of land at the village. Dalim, along with 20/25 ethnic people hired from Niamatpur upazila, went to harvest paddy on the disputed land on Friday morning. A clash ensued at about 9 am when the people of Anwar tried to resist them from harvesting the paddy, killing three indigenous people on the spot and injuring 10 others.
