Students of Noakhali Government Mohila College formed a human chain in front of the local press club yesterday demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the culprits who threw acid on Selina Akhtar, a student of the college, early Tuesday. Teachers, journalists, lawyers and representatives from other professional bodies also joined the human chain on the same demand. A gang of criminals entered the house of late Sourav Hossain at Motipur village in Sadar upazila and threw acid on his elder daughter Selina, 17, while she was asleep. Hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and took Selina to Noakhali Medical College Hospital. Later, she was shifted to Acid Survivors Foundation at Banani in Dhaka. Selina is one of the witnesses in a case filed against the culprits who hurled acid at her younger sister Farzana Akhtar, 14, on June 16 in 2010. Selina's mother Mazeda Khatun filed a case with Sudharam Police Station on Wednesday, mentioning the names of the six accused in the previous case she filed with the police station in 2010. Police on Wednesday night arrested Md Sharif, one of the accused, in Ashwadia area in Sadar upazila. Selina's family members and locals said stalkers hurled acid at Farzana Aktar, 14, a class seven student of a local madrasa, on June 16, 2010. Mazeda Begum filed a case with Sudharam Police Station the same day, accusing Md Shahjahan, Yeasin Arafat, Md Sharif, Giashuddin, Md Mahmud and Md Parvez. The accused were freed on bail recently and put pressure on Selina and her family to withdraw the case. Family members alleged that the culprits threw acid on Selina as she gave her statement before the court as a witness in the case for throwing acid on her sister Farzana.
