Bailey bridge collapses
Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Bhairab-Kishoreganj highway resumed yesterday morning after 12 hours of suspension due to the collapse of a bailey bridge on Tuesday night.
Officer in-charge of Bhairab police station M Shahjahan said the bridge over a canal at Gazirtek in Bhairab upazila fell down due to the pressure of a loaded truck at about 10 pm. Traffic on the highway came to a halt after the bridge collapsed, he said.
Meanwhile, light vehicles resumed plying on the highway under an alternative arrangement at about 9 am yesterday.
The Department of the Roads and Highways under the supervision of local administration made a temporary road beside the collapsed bridge after working throughout the night.
RHD sources said it would take at least 15 days to repair the damaged bridge after salvaging the truck.
