12 hurt, 7 houses vandalised as 'poll rivals' clash

At least 12 people were injured in a fierce clash between two rival groups at Kotakol village under Kotakol union in Lohagara upazila on Sunday night. During the clash, at least 7 houses were vandalised and valuables worth Tk 2 lakh looted, victims said. The village is about 40 kilometers away from the district headquarters. Locals said, a conflict between two groups -- one led by Kotakol union chairman Khan Jahagir Alam and Dulu Munshi and the other by Hemayet Hossain Biswas Himu and Sheikh Akram Hossain alias Akram Member resurfaced over the last union election on June 26 this year. Khan Jahagir Alam won the election, defeating his rival candidate Hemayet Hossain. Sunday's clash took place after Didar and Mohashin, supporters of Jahagir Alam and Dulu Munshi, beat up Oliar Sheikh, plaintiff of a case against them, also a supporter of Hemayet Hossain and ransacked his house at Kotakol village at around 7:30pm. Hearing the news, Hemayet Hossain's men, equipped with lethal weapons, made a counter attack on them, triggering a fierce clash. At least seven houses were vandalised during the clash. Seriously injured Nowshad Mollah, 24, Mahmud Sheikh 35, Arjina Begum, 40, Hamida Begum, 38, Robiul Sheikh, 25, Hilangi Sheikh, 35, Asif Sheikh, 10, Bulu Begum, 35 and Salma Begum, 36 of both groups were admitted to Lohagara health complex and Narail Sadar Hospital. Abdur Rakib Khan, officer in-charge of Lohagara police said, a team rushed to the spot immediately and dispersed the clashing groups to bring the situation under control.
