Mob beat suspected child lifter dead in Thakurgaon
A mob beat an elderly man dead at Haldibari village in Pirganj upazila on Wednesday, suspecting him as a child lifter.
One Entazul Haque, 35, of the village was arrested and a case was filed against 500 people in this connection, said officer in-charge of Pirganj police station.
The villagers beat the unidentified victim, aged about 60, leaving him injured seriously following his 'suspicious movement' in the area at about 9:30am.
On information, police rescued the man from the spot and sent him to upazila health complex.
As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital where he died at noon, the OC added.
Fear of child lifting gripped the people of many places in Panchagarh and Thakurgaon districts in the last few months following some unwanted incidents.
In Panchagarh, at least 15 policemen were injured allegedly by villagers when a team went to rescue a suspected child lifter from a mob at Sannashirdanga village in Debiganj uapzila on April 21.
The rescued man was later found to be a mentally challenged person.
Criminals kidnapped a schoolboy from the district town last month and later killed him failing to realise ransom money from the victim's parents, said locals.
