Recording of deposition of PWs deferred again
A Habiganj court yesterday deferred for the third time the recoding of witnesses' deposition in five cases for serial blasts in the district town on August 17 in 2005 as police failed to produce one of the accused before the court.
Judge Md Mahtab Hossain of the Additonal District and Sessions Judge's Court, however, fixed June 26 for recording the witnesses' deposition, court sources said.
Police produced six accused--outlawed JMB chief Maulana Saidur Rahman, his son AHM Shamim, also IT chief of the outfit, JMB activists Belal Ahmed alias Tamim, Obaiduillah Sumon, Salauddin alias Salehin and Salauddin Saleh.
As Public Prosecutor (PP) Akbar Hossain Jitu informed the court that police could not produce accused Azizul Islam from Sylhet Jail, the judge stopped recording the statements of six witnesses and fixed the fresh date.
After the serial blasts on August 17, police filed five cases with Habiganj Sadar Police Station the same day. Later, law enforcers arrested Maulana Saidur Rahman, his son AHM Shamim and five other JMB men in connection with the cases.
Following investigation, police pressed charges against Maulana Saidur, his son Shamim and seven others. Of them, two are still at large.
The cases were later transferred to the Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal at Sylhet in August 2010.a
