16 get life for killing grocer in Feni
A court here yesterday sentenced 16 people to life imprisonment for killing a grocer in Dagon Bhuiyan upazila of the district in 2004.
Judge Muhammad Harunur Rashid of the Additional District Judge's Court pronounced the verdict. He also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, in default they are to suffer another tow months in jail.
The convicts are Main Uddin, 23, Mozammel, 26, Didar, 31, Fakhrul Islam, 32, Jahangir Alam, 21, Abul Kalam, 25, Nabi, 25, Nayan, 25, Mir Hossain, 22, Yasin, 23, Halim, 24, Kamal Uddin, 32, Jane Alam alias Jana, 20, Joynal Abedin alias Moqbul, 19, Ratan, 23 and Harun, 28. They all are from Khushipur village in the upazila.
Six of them--Main, Mozammel, Didar, Fakhrul, Jahangir and Kalam--are now in jail while the rest still at large.
According to the prosecution, a gang of 17 people entered the grocery shop of Nur Alam Sohag at Gozaria Bazar in Dagon Bhuiyan upazila on the night of April 13 in 2004.
When Sohag asked them to pay their dues and refused to sell them goods on credit, they became furious and beat him dead.
Sohag's father Habib Ullah filed a murder case with Dagon Bhuiyan Police Station the followind day, accusing 17 people. One of them named Rafiq Ullah alias Rafique Member died during the trial of the case.
