One killed, 43 hurt as villagers clash in 3 dists
A man was killed and at least 43 others were injured in clashes in Meherpur, Faripur and Sirajganj yesterday and the previous day.
One person was killed and five others were injured as two groups of villagers clashed over a piece of disputed land in Meherpur Sadar upazila yesterday, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
Police identified the deceased as Mojibar Rahman, 40, son of Abu Toyeb of Govipur village.
Police said Toyeb and one Humayun Kabir had a longstanding dispute over the ownership of a mango orchard at the village and a case in this connection was under trial.
Jahangir Alam, officer in-charge of Meherpur Sadar police station, said when people of Humayun went to occupy the mango orchard in the morning, Toyeb's men resisted it triggering a violent clash.
Mojibar died on the spot while five others were injured, the OC said.
In Faridpur, three people including two policemen were injured as two local influential groups clashed at Kodmi village of Rupapat union under Boalmari upazila on Tuesday morning.
Police fired 9 rounds of bullets to disperse the clashing groups, reports our correspondent.
Bullet-hit Akram Khan, 38, son of Hingul Khan of Kodmi villager was sent to a hospital in Gopalganj while the two cops -- Shajahan Molla, 57, Zillur Rahman, 50, of Boalmari -- were admitted to Fridpur Medical College Hospital.
Source said, the clash ensued between two groups led by Shajahan Molla (AL supporter) and Maruf Mia (BNP supporter) at around 9 am. Around 300 supporters of Maruf Mia attacked the houses of Shajahan Molla's supporters as four people loyal to Maruf were arrested by police on Monday night.
In Sirajganj, at least 35 people including police and women were injured in separate clashes at Dhamkol village under Kamarkhand upazila on Tuesday night and yesterday, reports our correspondent.
During the clash in the town, a house and a shop were set on fire. Police fired 25 rounds rubber bullets and two tear gas shells and arrested 12 people.
Police said a group of youths of Charmalsapara stabbed Tobel of Atapara area on Tuesday night over a trivial issue triggering clashes on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
During clashes, 30 people including constable Abu Taleb and constable AB Siddiq were injured.
Among them, eight including Tobel, Rubel, Hamida Khatun, Osman Gani and Anowar Hossain were admitted to hospital and clinics.
In another clash over lifting soil from Fulzor River in Kamarkhand upazila between the supporters of Mukul Mandal and the villagers yesterday left five people injured.
