Hundreds of villagers of Kanchibari union in Sundarganj upazila brought out procession and formed a human chain at Bazra Kanchibari bazaar yesterday, demanding capital punishment to the killers of trader Abdul Jobber. Local traders pulled their shutters down and joined the agitation calling for immediate arrest of Hyder Ali, Abu Sayeed Liton, Zahedul Islam and others for their alleged involvement in the killing. The protesters, including women and students, paraded the roads of the area before forming a human chain on Sundarganj-Gaibandha road. The speakers at a rally there said there was a quarrel between the victim and the accused persons over a disputed pond. On April 9, a gang carrying lethal weapons attacked Abdul Jobber and others, injuring 15 people. On April 11, severely injured Abdul Jobber died at hospital. When the death news spread, agitated villagers attacked and ransacked the houses of the attackers. Victim's wife Jyotsna Begum filed a murder case accusing 10 people including Hyder Ali, Zahedul Islam, Abu Syeed Liton, Abul Kaiyum and Kaziul Islam. The speakers alleged that police were yet to arrest any of the accused while the culprits continued to threaten the wife and relatives of the victim to withdraw the case. They demanded immediate arrest of the killers, failing which a tougher agitation programme will be announced, they warned.
