One killed, 15 injured as AL factions clash in Jhenidah

One person was killed and at least 15 others, including policeman, were injured in a clash between two rival factions of Awami League at Bakri village in Sadar upazila on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Zahidul Islam, 36, son of Abdul Mannan of village Shabashpur in the same upazila. Police and locals said there was a longstanding dispute between two rival factions of Awami League -- one led by Farukuzzaman alias Farid and another by Azad Master -- over establishing supremacy in the area. The dispute intensified since the last UP election and centering formation of the managing committee of Panami Girls' High School in Harisankarpur union. A clash ensued between them over the issue on Monday evening that left a man injured. As a sequel, both the factions equipped with sharp weapons, sticks and brickbats attacked each other, leaving 15 people injured from the both sides on Tuesday morning. On information, police rushed to the spot when Sub Inspector Aziz was injured. The injured were rushed to Sadar Hospital. Of them, Monnu Kha and Zahidul Islam were transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital from where Zahidul was moved to Dhaka as his condition deteriorated. He, however, succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the evening.
