College student killed in clash

A higher secondary level student was killed in a clash between two groups of students at Panti village in Kumarkhali upazila, 33 kilometres south-east of the district town, yesterday. The deceased, Manjurul Islam, 18, was the son of Abdur Rashid of the village. He was a second year student at Panti Degree College. The clash erupted over a quiz competition organised by a local madrasa. Police said Unmul Dakhil Madrasa arranged a quiz competition on general knowledge for the college students of the area. Two groups of Panti Degree College--one led by Ruhul Amin and other by Manjurul Islam--took part in the contest at about 10:30am at a class room of the madrasa. They engaged in an altercation as Ruhul Amin group alleged that the opponent group was receiving answers from outside, said Ferdous Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC), Kumarkhali Police Station. At one stage, the two groups got locked in a clash around 11:30am with sticks and sharp weapons, leaving around 16 persons of both groups injured. Of the injured, six were rushed to Kushtia general hospital. Manjurul died in that hospital around 1:30pm. On hearing the news of the death, Manjurul's family members, relatives and supporters attacked the houses of Ruhul Amin and his followers. “They ransacked at least 10 houses”, said OC Ferdous. The houses were also looted, alleged people belonging Ruhul Amin group. Police also arrested Md Ali, Jamaat-e-Islami ameer of Kushtia district sadar unit, and Hazi Salamat Ullah, Jamaat's district unit rokon.
