A murmur of excitement and the fond recollection of memories rippled through a hotel in the capital where freedom fighters and eminent and cultural personalities gathered yesterday. One might have mistaken it for a reunion of freedom fighters, which it was in practicality. But they were also there to witness the unveiling of a book, “Ekatturer Birjoddha” (War heroes of 1971). The book brings to life, through a vivid illustration, the stories, struggle and sacrifice of these valiant sons of the soil. Planning Minister Air Vice Marshal (retd) AK Khandakar unveiled the first volume of the book, published through the joint efforts of Prothom Alo and HSBC Bangladesh. The stories have been coming regularly on the Prothom Alo. Matiur Rahman, editor and publisher of Prothom Alo, said it was very difficult to collect the stories and personal information as many freedom fighters died while the others were lying low, uninterested at drawing attention to their sacrifices. The first volume tells the tale of 300 awarded freedom fighters, including 29 Bir Uttams, 85 Bir Bikrams and 186 Bir Pratiks. The second volume, likely to be published at the end of 2012 or in between March to April, 2013, would contain the tales of Bir Shreshthas, he added. Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman said freedom fighters were not honoured in the way they deserved to be and this book will help us think anew in this regard. HSBC Bangladesh Chief Executive Officer Andrew Tilke and Head of Corporate Banking Mahbub-ur-Rahman also spoke at the programme.
