Farmers have started harvesting of two early varieties of boro paddy in Sunamganj. Marking the occasion, they held a rally in Shulla upazila on Tuesday. BRI-45 and BRI-28 varieties along with some others were cultivated successfully in the area under a special programme styled Economic Empowerment of the Poorest (EEP) this year. The verities, released by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), can be cultivated and harvested much ahead of the boro season in the low-lying region of the district, which goes under water almost every year, farmers said at the programme. Several farmers said during the months of Chaitra and Baishakh (March-April), they suffer much often due to early flood as the whole region is a flood-prone area. Addressing the rally, deputy director of agricultural extension (DAE) Dr SM Afsaruzzaman said per hectare yield of these varieties is 4.5 to 5.5 tonnes. Still the farmers are much safer for the farmers in the haor region as it faces threat of early flood every year, he added. Besides BRRI, other organisations like BADC and Helvetas Swiss Inter-cooperation(IC), an international organisation, have been working in Sunamganj for popularising the early varieties of boro paddy since 2005, said the speakers.
