Hundreds of day labourers of Aditmari upazila yesterday demonstrated in the town demanding return of the money they paid to five people after they promised to arrange jobs for them. The accused are Humayun Kabir, Khoka Mia, Mozammel Haque, Joinuddin and Sona Mia. The agitating labourers also besieged the house of Khoka at Bhelabari village in the upazila. In January, a gang led by Kabir took Tk 1200 from each labourer, promising to arrange year-long earth filling job for them at Rotnai Khal (canal) under the village, alleged the demonstrators. “They also assured that each of us would get Tk 300 and Tk 250 a day” said a victim. However, the gang is yet to give any job to anyone at the khal, triggering the protest, said the hapless labourers. Abiya Begum, 32, wife of Bahar Uddin, said “Kabir along with his four accomplices took Tk 1200 from me in the name of giving the job within three months”. Mohammad Ali, 42, son of Hazrat Ali, said he borrowed Tk 1200 from one of his relatives and gave it to the gang three months ago for getting the job. “Now my relatives are asking me to repay the money, leaving me virtually helpless as I am yet to get the job”, he added. Local UP member Jobed Ali said Kabir, Mozammel and Joinuddin fled with the money of over 600 labourers while Khoka and Sona are still at their homes. Claiming his innocence, Khoka said Kabir, Mozammel and Joinuddin were responsible for the matter. Contacted, Kabir however, refuted the allegation. Mahfuzur Rahman, officer in-charge of Aditmari police station, said although he was aware of the matter, none came to him to file any complaint over the issue.
