Action Against Colleague

RMC teachers' 24-hr ultimatum

A Correspondent, Rangpur
Teachers at Rangpur Medical College yesterday threatened to go for an indefinite strike if a decision for punitive steps against a senior teacher was not withdrawn within 24 hours. In a memorandum to RMC principal, handed over by Dr Abdur Rouf, they also protested the order for action against Dr Nurunnabi Laizu, head of the department of dermatology of the college. Sources said the ministry of health issued an order to withdraw the doctor after a number of students recently accused him of blasphemous remarks. However, the teachers of the college alleged that the principal instigated some students belonging to Islami Chhatra Shibir to bring such 'false allegation' against him. "I am a victim of dirty internal feud in local unit of the Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad", Dr Laizu said. Sources said, a new committee of the organisation would be formed very soon. But the principal does not want Laizu to stay at RMC, fearing defeat of his panel. Laizu said, his protest against a 'massive corruption' in the appointment process of 3rd and 4th class employees in the college recently had also angered the principal. Contacted, principal Dr Abdur Rouf said he received the memorandum of the teachers and forwarded it to the ministry of health. The allegations of the teachers brought against me are not based on facts, he said.
