Bridge collapses after storm, 8 injured
At least eight people, including three schoolgirls, were injured as a bridge collapsed after storm in Galachipa upazila on Tuesday.
The bridge, a part of which was damaged during storm in the afternoon, connects Gajalia and Dakua, two unions under the upazila.
The injured include Subarna Akter, Renee and Nargis Begum, students of Gajalia Hat Government Primary School, said Piyara Begum, an assistant teacher at the school.
The incident took place when the victims were crossing the bridge at around 5:00pm.
Local sources said that the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) built the 240-meter -long bridge on Gajalia canal in 1979 to connect the two unions. But no repair or renovation work took place in the last 33 years.
Earlier, a number of school going children sustained injuries while crossing the bridge due to its bad condition.
MA Kuddus, chairman of Gajalia union parishad, said they informed the authorities about the matter several times, but to no effect.
