Courtrooms vandalised while chasing bike rider

A group of Pabna BNP men vandalised two courtrooms of the chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in the town yesterday morning as a motorbike rider whom they chased took shelter there. The BNP men were going to their district office in a procession to join a rally on the office premises. When the procession reached in front of the court at around 11:00am, a motorbike rammed one of the processionists. Following the incident, the BNP activists chased the bike rider, Mohammed Ali, 30, of Sadhupara village under Sadar upazila. As he went to the court running and took shelter inside a room, the BNP men attacked the court building and vandalised rooms of the Judicial Magistrate Court-3 and Judicial Magistrate Court-4. Activities at all the courts remained suspended for two hours as the Judges, deputy commissioner and district police officers held an emergency meeting in the office of the chief judicial magistrate. After the meeting, Md Monirul Islam, an official of the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court, filed a case was with Pabna Sadar Police Station. Police arrested 23 BNP activists from different parts of the district headquarters. Police said door and windowpanes of the courtrooms were damaged and three people injured during the attack. Assistant Public Prosecutor advocate Johurul Islam and on duty police constable at Judicial Court-4 are among the injured. Md Enayet Uddin, officer-in-charge of Pabna police station, said they have recorded the case under the Speedy Trial Act. The arrestees were produced in a court that sent them to jail. District BNP General Secretary Habibur Rahman Tota said his party was not involved with the incident. “We remained busy holding a rally in front of our party office at that time. We condemn the attacks and demand an impartial investigation into the incident.” Tota said. Pabna District Bar association Secretary advocate Masud Khandaker, also a leader of BNP district unit, condemned the incident. He demanded proper investigation into the attacks on the court. Public Prosecutor advocate Belayet Ali Bilu demanded arrest and exemplary punishment of all the culprits involved.
