Youth killed, over 50 injured as villagers clash in 2 districts

A youth was killed and more than 50 others were injured as rival groups locked in clashes in Chandpur and Brahmanbaria districts on Monday. A young man was killed and seven others were injured in a clash in Chandpur town on Monday night, reports our correspondent. Police and witnesses said a group of 8-10 people led by Mohammad Raju of Nazir Para attacked Khokon Majumder, an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League, with sharp weapons due to previous enmity, leaving him badly injured. Hearing the news, a group of youths of Langta Bari area attacked and vandalised a number of shops on Stadium Road at about 9:00pm. Later, they stormed into several houses at Nazir Para and attacked Bilal Dewan, his elder brother Ahmed Ali Dewan, Otu Dewan, Md Hanif, Kalu Dewan, Saleha Begum, Amir Dewan and Khokon Majumder with sharp weapons. Bilal, 24, succumbed to his injuries around 10:30pm after he was taken to a local hospital. Police arrested Shaikat Das for involvement in the killing of Bilal Dewan. According to police, Khokon Majumder beat up Raju mercilessly and left him on the road five to six months ago. Raju group launched the attack Monday night to retaliate it, police said. Bilal's elder brother Gafur Dewan said Bilal was not involved in the attack on Khokon Majumder. In Brahmanbaria, at least 50 people, including policemen, were injured in a clash between two groups over a cricket match in Ashuganj upazila on Monday afternoon, reports UNB. Police and locals said, during a cricket match between two local teams at Charchartala village, an altercation took place between the supporters of one Sharif of `Kha Bari` and Shamim, a local influential man, of `Kechki Bari'. In a sequel to the altercation, supporters of both Sharif and Shamim, equipped with lethal weapons, engaged in a fierce clash for three hours leaving 50 people, including Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Ashuganj police station Sajedul Islam and a constable injured. Police said at least 10 dwelling houses were also damaged by the clashing groups. Many of the injured were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, Ashuganj hospital and other hospitals and clinics.
