People of Amnura union under Chapaianwabganj Sadar upazila brought out a procession and formed a human chain in the town yesterday protesting acquisition of land at Jhilim Bazar and Shahani para in the union for extension of a power plant. The government has acquired 14 acres and 27 decimals of land at Jhilim Bazar and Shahi Para along the Nachole-Godagari Road for extension of a 50-magawatt rental power plant and also served notices on the land owners on April 1. After parading the main streets in the town, around 500 protesters joined a human chain in front of the deputy commissioner's office and then submitted a memorandum to him. In the memo, they urged the government to immediately stop acquisition of their land. Otherwise, they threatened to launch an agitation programme, including a sit-in at Jhilim Bazar, on April 21. Addressing a rally in front of the DC's office, they alleged that the government has decided to pay Tk 57 thousand against each decimal of land, but the present value of the same land is double. The rally was addressed, among others, by Tosikul Islam, chairmen of Jhilim Union Parishad, Shahjalal Shahin, president of Jatiya Sramik Laegue district unit, Mushfiqur Rahman, joint convener of Krishak League district unit, and land owners Parvin Akhter, Shariful Islam, and Lutfor Rahman.
