Manipuri Utsab begins in Sylhet today
The three-day-long 'Manipuri Utsab-2012' begins in the Sylhet city today with the participation of the Manipuri people from greater Sylhet division.
Organisers announced it at a press conference in Sylhet Press Club yesterday.
Friends in Village Development, Bangladesh (FIVDB), a non-government organisation, will organise the event in association with Toyota Foundation.
The programme's main objective is to highlight the vibrant Manipuri community, an ethnic community of Bangladesh, and its culture that has a long historical background.
The programme, to be held at Hafiz Complex, will include cultural functions, seminars and view exchange meetings with journalists, businessmen and cultural personalities on issues related to the community.
Besides, a bridging programme will be arranged to link the traditional Manipuri weavers to the traders and exporters, since the community's womenfolk lack access to marketing facilities for their produces.
Also, display of traditional weaving will be arranged at the venue.
A seminar on the Manipuri culture will also be held where veteran educationist and writer Prof Dr Syed Manzurul Islam, writer and researcher Prof Dr Hayat Mamud and Bela's Chief Syeda Rizwana Hasan will address.
Festival committee member Zahed Ahmed and coordinator Enayet US Islam, FIVDB Senior Programme Organiser Chowdhury Fazle Nur Ismat, and eminent Manipuri personalities like poet AK Sheram and cultural activist Rana Kumar Sinha were also present at the conference.
