Singapore President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam yesterday assured his Bangladesh counterpart that Singapore would increase its support for the development of Bangladesh. The assurance came when President Zillur Rahman, now in Singapore for medical checkups, met Keng Yam at his Presidential Palace, according to a message received here. “Bangladesh is making rapid progress,” said Keng Yam. He lauded Bangladesh for its highest contributions to the UN Peacekeeping Mission. He emphasised organising 'investment seminars' in Singapore to increase their investment in Bangladesh. Keng Yam said Singapore was keen to provide support for the infrastructural development, particularly building a water treatment centre in Bangladesh. He hoped that the cooperative relations between the two countries would be further extended and deepened in the days to come. During the hour-long meeting, Zillur recalled that Singapore was the first among the South East Asian countries that recognised Bangladesh after its Liberation War in 1971. He expressed gratitude to the president and the government of Singapore for their cooperation for the last four decades for the development of Bangladesh. He noted that around 500,000 Bangladeshis had been working in Singapore and requested his counterpart to recruit more people from Bangladesh in future. He urged the Singapore government to import world-class Bangladeshi products, including readymade garments, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, jute and jute products, leather and leather goods at competitive prices. As Zillur invited Keng Yam to visit Bangladesh, Keng Yam said he would visit Bangladesh at his convenient time.
