2,000 accused in four cases

Four separate cases were filed with Kaliganj police station on Friday, accusing over 2,000 people of torching and vandalising several houses at Fatepur and Chakdah villages in Kaliganj upazila on March 31 and April 1. Khalilur Rahman of Nilkanthapur village filed a case with Kaliganj police station against 250 people, including Mizanur Rahman, a correspondent of local daily Dristipat, for publishing a false report on March 29 that led to violent incident at Fatepur on March 31. The report said that the students of Fatepur High School made indecent remarks on Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (SM) while they were staging a drama titled 'Hujur Kebla' on the school premises on March 27. Following the report, agitated people torched ten houses, Fatepur High school and a club and looted several other houses including that of Mita Rani, a teacher of the school. The second case was filed by Habibur Rahman of Fatepur village, accusing 30 identified people including local JP leaders Mosharraf Hossain and Zulfiqar Ali, Shibir leader Masum Billah, Jamaat leader Mizanur Rahman of torching and damaging houses at Fatepur on March 31. He also sued over 1,000 unnamed people. In the third case, Sub-inspector (SI) Yasin Alam Chowdhury of Kaliganj police station sued JP leader Mosharraf Hossain, daily Dristipat correspondent Mizanur Rahman, JP leader Zulfiqar Ali, Shibir leader Masum Billah for torching and looting three houses at the same village. Sub-inspector (SI) Zayadul Islam of the same police station filed a separate case, accusing over 500 people for torching seven houses of minority community at Chakdah on the night of April 1.
