A man was sentenced to death by the Speedy Trial Tribunal of Rajshahi yesterday for strangling his 11-year-old brother-in-law over property in 2009. The convict Rakib Sonar, 24, of Gurudaspur in Natore, was also fined Tk 1 lakh, said Entajul Haque Babu, the tribunal's public prosecutor. The tribunal Judge Ekramul Haque Chowdhury also sentenced one, Nazmul Haque Khaza, 25, to life term for aiding Rakib in the murder. On October 30, 2009, Sabuj Ali, a student of class VI and son of Abu Taher of Chatchkoir village of Boraigram upazila, went out to play football with Rakib. He then went missing. Two days later, police found Sabuj's body from neighbouring Atgram village with his hands and legs tied. Post-mortem revealed that Sabuj was strangulated. The next day, Rakib confessed to Taher that greed over the family's property forced him to strangle Sabuj and offered him Tk 10 lakh so as not to press charges against him. Taher went on to file a case with Boraigram Police Station accusing six people and the charge sheet was filed accusing Rakib, his father Atahar Sonar, Nazmul and neighbour Rina Begum. The case was shifted to Rajshahi from Natore on October 7, 2010. The tribunal heard 21 out of 23 prosecution witnesses and announced the verdict in 111 workdays.
