English language fairs under English in Schools programme, a joint initiative of The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi, were held at two schools in Chapainawabganj and Khulna districts yesterday. Adcom Ltd is the creative and event partner of the fairs. Around 200 students of Monjur Ahmed High School at Futnibazar in Bholahat upazila of Chapainawabnganj took part in English language fair held at the school's auditorium, reports our correspondent. Mohamamd Abdullah, headmaster of the school, formally inaugurated the fair at around 11:00am. Globally renowned movie The Lion King was screened, followed by quizzes on vocabulary, situation-based question-answer, extempore speech and role play. Students of the school participated in joyful interactions and watched the events based on the movie. Eighteen students won different competitions. English teachers Abul Kalam and Rezaul Islam of the school were judges. Headmaster Mohammad Abdullah and area manager of Robi Abdullah Al Mamun distributed prizes among the winners at the end of the programme. Our staff correspondent from Khulna reported that around 170 students Koira Madinabad Secondary School and Technical College in Koira upazila of the district joined the English language fair at the school yesterday, Md Saidur Rahman, senior English teacher of the institution, inaugurated the fair at 12:00noon. The programme began with the screening of the movie The Lion King which was followed by competitions on vocabulary, extempore speech, role play and moral lessons. “It is matter of pride and pleasure for us that The Daily Star has organised English in Schools programme in Koira upazila which is adjacent to the Sudarbans,” Saidur Rahman said in his inaugural speech. He hoped this noble cause will go a long way and the objective that The Daily star and mobile operator Robi have set will not lose sight with passage of time. Twelve students won different competitions as per judgment of a panel of three teachers who teach English at the school. Later, prizes were distributed among the winners. Aiming to promote English language learning among school students across the country, The Daily Star in cooperation with Robi undertook English in Schools programme in 2009. Under the initiative, each of one thousand schools selected from 64 districts of the country receives three complimentary copies of The Daily Star five days a week. The ongoing English language fairs at different schools are being held in coordination with the education ministry as part of the three-year-long programme.
