Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi
A housewife yesterday succumbed to her burn injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) hours after she was set ablaze allegedly by her husband and in-law relatives at Raninagar in Rajshahi city. The victim, Sathi Khatun, 25, daughter of Sajjad Hossain of Hatimkhan area in the city, was brought to RMCH around 4:30pm, where she expired at 6:00pm, said Saiful Ferdous, a duty doctor of the hospital. About 90 percent of her body was burnt, he added. Hafizur Rahman, sub-inspector (SI) of Boalia Police Station, said Sathi was poured kerosene and set on fire around 4:00pm. Sathi's husband Arif Hossain, a private car driver, often tortured her and finally killed her for dowry, alleged the victim's sister Shahnaz Begum. Sathi and Arif were married a year ago and she often returned home from Arif's house with complaints of beating, said Shahnaz. Quoting neighbours, the SI said Arif and his relatives beat up Sathi yesterday afternoon and, at one stage, set her on fire pouring kerosene over her. Neighbours rescued Sathi and took her to the hospital. All the in-laws family members fled after the incident, said police. Sathi's family is taking preparation for filing a murder case against her husband and in-laws with Boalia Police Station.
