Female resident students of Rokeya Hall at Rajshahi University held the proctor and the provost in confinement Monday night after some 30 students fell sick, taking unhygienic foods at the dinning hall. The students also vandalised the hall main gate and the provost's office, demanding investigation into the incident and improvement of the standard of foods. About 15 female students fell sick Sunday night while 10 more had illness the next night. Suffering from various food borne diseases, they were admitted to the university medical centre and given first aid. On Monday night, the resident students met Provost Saeda Akter around 10:00pm and demanded proper investigation into the incident. As the provost failed to take any prompt decision over the demand, the students confined Proctor Choudhury Muhammad Zakaria, the provost, two house tutors, and some hall officials to the provost's office for about 45 minutes. They were freed on assurance of investigation. A two-member probe body was formed in this connection. The hall authorities will take proper decision on completion of the investigation. Shib Sangkar Ray, a resident teacher of the hall, claimed that the foods served at the dining hall were not poisonous. The victims fell sick due to sudden heat surge, he added.
