The Directorate of Environment (DoE) yesterday asked the chairman of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) to send the identities of those responsible for encroachment and pollution of Uttara Lake. Director of DoE (enforcement) Mohammad Munir Chowdhury also asked the Rajuk chairman to take necessary steps to eliminate encroachment and stop water pollution of the lake. Munir Chowdhury on March 8 sent two samples of water of the lake for lab test and DoE found proof of pollution in the lake's water. Lab test found low rate of oxygen in the water that is simply detrimental to life in the water body, a DoE statement said. Earlier, a group of eminent citizens of the area including former professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Asadullah Khan called on the DoE director and requested him to take necessary steps to stop pollution and encroachment of the lake. Chowdhury said DoE will take legal action against those responsible for the pollution of the lake immediately.
