JMB leader to die
A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a leader of banned outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to death for detonating a bomb at Gazipur police superintendent's office in February 2009.
Judge Mohammad Motahar Hossain of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 handed down the sentence to Mamunur Rashid alias Zahid of Saghata in Gaibandha district.
Earlier, the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 22 prosecution witnesses.
Mamunur, also accused in four other cases, appealed to the court for a certified copy of the judgement.
According to the prosecution, Mamunur Rashid on February 20, 2009 hurled a grenade at police officers and journalists present in the police superintendent's office during a press conference.
The incident injured around 16 people.
Earlier on that day, police captured Mamunur and three others of the banned organisation with five grenades and a huge quantity of bomb-making materials from capital's Tongi.
Mamunur caused the explosion when he and the others were shown to the media. The convict flung himself on the seized grenades on display and managed to pull the pin out of one. In a split of a second he hurled the grenade at the police and journalists present.
Following the incident, police filed a case against Mamunur Rashid with Joydevpur Police Station.
