JS body slates ministry over outage
The parliamentary standing committee on the power ministry yesterday sharply criticised the ministry for frequent power outage across the country.
Even a member of the committee walked out of a meeting, held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, for sometime protesting the ministry's failure to tackle electricity crisis.
At the meeting, the members of the JS body asked where has the 3,500 megawatts of electricity that the present government has produced in the last three years gone?
In absence of State Minister M Enamul Haq, Power Secretary Abul Kalam Azad had to face the volley of questions of the legislators who were present at the meeting.
“Why people across the country are still facing frequent power outage when the government is claiming to have produced 3,500MW power, why people are not getting benefit of it", a member of the committee asked.
“You [power secretary] have to answer the question”, added the ruling party MP.
Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, an AL MP and a member of the committee, asked the secretary why the JS body's recommendations on resolving power crisis were not implemented.
Expressing dismay, Jakob, at one point, walked out of the meeting. He, however, returned after sometime, a member of the committee said.
The JS body also voiced "grave" concern over the possible damage in agriculture sector for want of electricity in irrigation.
On March 8, the ruling alliance MPs blasted the state minister for power and prime minister's adviser in the sector for their failure to resolve power crisis.
