Census on 4 service orgs begins on April 1

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will begin census 2011-12, on four commercial service providing organisations from April 1 throughout the country. The census will continue for ten days on four commercial services providing organisations- decorator service, security service, cleaning service and recruiting service agencies. The survey is necessary to assess their contribution in the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) of the country. It was disclosed in the inaugural session of a two-day training programme for the master trainers and supervisors linked to the census programmes at the BBS auditorium yesterday. BBS organised the training programme with its Director General (DG) M Shahjahan Ali Molla in the chair. Secretary of the Statistics Division Riti Ibrahim attended the programme as the chief guest. As many as 200 master trainers, including the officials, are taking part in the training to be preceded by another training at the district level on March 19-20. It was disclosed in the training that industry and service providing sectors are contributing 30 percent to the economy of the country, which was only 15 percent earlier. On the other hand, contribution of the agricultural sector is declining and stood at 16 percent from 21 percent to the economy, BBS sources said. There are 18,000 decorator service organisations, 486 security services, nearly 500 cleaning and 416 recruiting service providing agencies in the country. Associate statistician Arman Bidar Bakhtnia from the ESCAP, joint secretary of the statistics division Dr M Abdul Jalil, deputy director general of the BBS M Mizanur Rahman and deputy director of BBS AKM Ashraful Haque, among others, participated in the programme.
