8 killed in road accidents

Eight people were killed and eight others injured in separate road accidents in Comilla, Satkhira, Chittagong and Pabna yesterday and on Friday. UNB reports: Three people, including a minor girl, were killed and five others injured as a truck rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw near Bagur Bus Stand on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chandina upazila of Comilla yesterday. Two of the deceased were identified as Shamima, 2, daughter of Alamgir Hossain of Premu village in Debidwar upazila, and Jahirul Islam, 40, son of Haji Akbar of Korpai village in Burichong upazila. The identity of the other could not be known immediately. Police said the Chittagong-bound truck from Dhaka hit the three-wheeler at about 1:00pm, leaving the two dead on the spot and six others, including Jahirul, injured. Jahirul succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. The injured were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital. Our Satkhira Correspondent reports: Two persons were killed and another was injured in separate road accidents in the district yesterday. The deceased are Biswajit Sarkar, 37, son of Megh Nath Sarkar of Meserdanga village in Tala upazila and also Khalishkhali union Jubo League president, and Zahanara Khatun, 30, wife of Rawshan Ali Khan of Kriparampur village in Kalaroa upazila. Biswajit died on the spot when two Nasimon (locally made engine-run vehicle) collided head on at Khalishkhali Bazar in Tala upazila, police said. Meanwhile, Zahanara Khatun was killed on the spot and her husband sustained injuries when their motorcycle fell into a roadside ditch as Rawshan lost control over the motorcycle. They were returning their village from their relative's house at village Dhandia in Tala upazila. Our Chittagong Correspondent adds: Two persons were killed and another was injured in separate road crashes in the port city and Shitakunda yesterday and on Friday. The deceased are Pranab Kanti Dhar, 55, of Madhyam Sonaichhari village in Shitakunda upazila, and Kamruzzaman, 35, of Kedachhara village under Matiranga Police Station in Khagrachhari district. Assistant Sub-Inspector Hamidur Rahman of Highway Police said they found the body of Pranab on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Baro Awlia at around 1:30am. They suspect a speeding vehicle ran over the victim and sped away In another incident, a Dhaka bound speeding covered van hit Kamruzzaman, leaving him dead on the spot while he was crossing the road in front of Champa Steel Mill in Banshbaria area of Shitakunda upazila at around 7:45pm on Friday, said police. Meanwhile, a speeding Pajero jeep collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw in front of Reema Community Centre at Askar Dighirpar in Jamal Khan area of the port city yesterday, leaving the auto-rickshaw driver injured critically, witnesses said. The injured Sudhir Babu, 40, of Nandirhat area in the port city, was admitted to nearby Center Point Hospital, said police. Our Pabna Correspondent reports: An elderly person was killed and another injured in a road accident on Pabna-Ishwardi highway in Tebunia Cinema Hall area on Friday evening. Locals said a motorcycle hit Nur Mohammed, 70, of Ranigram village in Pabna Sadar upazila while he was crossing the road in the area and fell into a roadside ditch. At the same time, also a speeding microbus hit Nur, leaving him dead on the spot. The motorcyclist was admitted to Pabna Medical College Hospital.
