Child marriage registrars to lose licenses: Law minister

Bss, Dhaka
Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said marriage registrars would lose their licenses if they recorded any child marriage in the country. The minister warned the marriage registrars saying, “Licenses of marriage registrars will be cancelled for documenting any child marriage because the society does not accept it.” He was speaking at a dialogue titled 'Grass-root level women empowerment: Inspiring teenagers in future leadership', marking the International Women's' Day at the LGRD auditorium in the city, says a press release. The UN Women and Action Aid jointly organised the dialogue. The minister called upon all the Union Parishad representatives and local leaders to perform responsible role in the society by preventing child marriage and drug addiction and maintaining law and order in the country. Action Aid Bangladesh Representative Farah Kabir presided over the programme while lawmaker Shagufta Yasmin, women and children ministry Secretary Tarik-ul-Islam, UN Women national programme Manager Nahid M Ahmed and other representatives from different organisation spoke on the occasion. Most countries have declared 18 as the minimum legal age of marriage for girls. Incidents of child marriage have gone up over the last 30 years. It still exists in the rural areas and among the ultra poor which results in lost development opportunities, limited life options and poor health.
