EWU Convocation
Pvt varsities should complement public ones: Matia
Private universities should flourish in the country to complement public universities and not as their rivals, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said yesterday.
A healthy competition between them can help raise the standard of higher education, she said and underscored the need for more universities in Bangladesh.
The minister was addressing the 11th convocation of East West University (EWU) on its own campus at Aftab Nagar in Rampura of the city yesterday, says a press release.
During the convocation, 643 students were conferred undergraduate degrees and 475 others graduate degrees.
Matia Chowdhury lauded the university's achievement that it has set up its own campus in a relatively shorter period of time and without imposing additional fees on students.
Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed, the convocation speaker, cautioned the students that the world was under a great problem--that was everything had been based on money.
"We need to be educated, we need to be industrious, and also we need to be honest human beings, full of love and affection for the disadvantaged groups in our country", he said.
Prof Ahmed Shafi, vice chancellor of East West University; Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, founder vice chancellor and president of the Board of Directors; and Dr Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, chairperson of the business administration department, also spoke. Afrida Tasnin Sagoty, a student of the department, delivered the Valedictorian's Speech.
