A mural named Sangrami Chetona (revolutionary spirit), created over the west gate of the Arts Building at Dhaka University, was inaugurated yesterday. The artwork marks the hoisting of the country's national flag for the first time on March 2, 1972. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique unveiled the 250-square-metre mural designed by Muhsin Kabir, a student of fine arts of DU. The mural shows the gathering of thousands of people with the red-green national flag in their hands. Top leaders of Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) and other educational institutions hoisted the flag on the Arts Building for the first time, said Mahfuja Khanom, ex-VP (vice president) of DUCSU. The VC said the mural would play an important role in reminding young people of the historical moments of hoisting the national flag and help them know the real history of the Liberation War. Prof Dr Sadrul Amin, dean of the arts faculty; Prof Dr Farid Uddin Ahmed, dean of the social science faculty; and Father Marino Rigon, a foreign friend of the country; attended inaugural ceremony. Joydhoni, a cultural organisation, arranged the programme.
