The Sector Corporation Sramik Karmachari Federation Shamannoy Parishad peacefully observed work abstention as part of a 48-hour strike in Chittagong city yesterday. Around 3,000 workers of 11 state-owned factories in the port city did not join work to press home a five-point demand including declaration of a pay scale with effect from July 2009. The strike started from 6:00am on Tuesday and is supposed to end 6:00am today. Police were deployed at the factories to maintain law and order. Shahidul Islam Belal, executive member of the parishad, said the central committee will organise a press conference at Dhaka Press Club on Saturday to announce further programme, he added. Meanwhile, workers of eight state-owned jute mills under Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) also observed work abstention with the same demands.
