Workers continue strike for pay scale

The first day of 48-hour strike called by Sector Corporation Sramik Karmachari Federation Samannaya Parishad passed off peacefully in the district yesterday. Around three thousand workers of eleven state owned factories in the port city did not join work to press home their five-point demand including declaration of pay scale from July 2009. To avert untoward situation, a good number of police were deployed at the factories, including Chittagong Dry Dock Limited, Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL), Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and Karnaphuli Paper Mills (KPM). Shahidul Islam Belal, executive member of the organisation, said the strike started from 6:00am yesterday and it would continue till 6:00am tomorrow. Meanwhile, workers of eight state owned jute mills under Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) also observed work abstention, said Mahbubul Alam, said convener of Patkal CBA Samannaya Parishad Chittagong unit. The mills include Amin Jute Mills, Hafiz Jute Mills, Baghdad-Dhaka Carpet Factory Ltd, MM Jute Mills, RR Jute Mills, Gul Ahmad Jute Mills, Gulfra Habib Ltd and Mills Furnishing Ltd.
