Over 100 RMG workers gripped by hysteria

More than hundred female garment workers of two garment factories fell sick due to mass hysteria in Katherpool area of Fatullah Industrial area yesterday. On Sunday, a female worker of Liberty Knitwear factory died of cardiac arrest and the factory remain closed for the rest of the day following the death. The workers joined their duty yesterday morning and around 9:30am Hasina of sewing section fell sick and collapsed. Within 10 minutes another 15 to 20 female workers became sick. Their sickness started with contractions. Later, they were rushed to Narayanganj 200-bed hospital, Narayanganj General Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Meanwhile, more than hundred female workers of Midland Knitwear factory also fell sick with the same symptoms. Dr Mahabub Haidar Shamim, medical officer of Narayanganj 200-bed hospital, said the patients were affected by mass hysteria and all of them were suffering from the same symptoms. Seriously affected Hosna, 25, Rehana, 30, Farida, 45, Rashida, 27, Parveen 25 and Hajera were sent to DMCH, police said.
